Citizenship

Citizens are considered persons who have been granted the status of citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina in accordance with the relevant law.

Citizenship of BiH in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Citizenship of BiH is acquired:

1. origin (within the jurisdiction of municipal/city administrative bodies),

2. by birth on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina (in the jurisdiction of municipal/city administration bodies),

3. adoption (within the jurisdiction of municipal/city administrative bodies),

4. through naturalization,

5. through an international agreement.

The application for acquiring BiH citizenship is submitted to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the HNC-Department for Administration and Support in the municipality of residence. List of headquarters addresses

Acquisition of citizenship of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina based on facilitated naturalization

The request is submitted by the party on the prescribed form, along with the following documentation:

1. extract from the MKR for the applicant,

2. extract from the marriage register,

3. certificate of citizenship of the home country of the person who is the applicant,

4. certificate of permanent residence in the territory of BiH, issued by the Ministry of Security of BiH-Service for Foreigners' Affairs stating that he/she has registered permanent residence in the territory of BiH for at least 3 years prior to submitting the application, of which the last year was in the territory of the Federation of BiH,

5. certificate of citizenship of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federation of BiH of the applicant's spouse,

6. a statement certified by the competent authority on the renunciation of previous citizenship after acquiring citizenship of BiH and the Federation, unless otherwise provided for by a bilateral agreement, provided that the statement on the renunciation and cessation of citizenship is not required if this is not permitted or cannot be reasonably required, which is determined in each specific case,

7. a certified copy of the applicant's passport,

   proof of payment of the federal administrative fee in the amount of 450.00 KM.

Acquisition of citizenship of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina based on naturalization for a child under 18 years of age

The request is submitted by the party on the prescribed form, along with the following documentation:

1. extract from the MKR for the child,

2. certificate of citizenship for the child from the home country,

3. extract from the MKR and proof of citizenship of the Federation for one of the child's parents, who acquired citizenship of the Federation after the child's birth,

4. proof of the child's permanent residence in the territory of the Federation issued by the Ministry of Security of BiH - Service for Foreigners' Affairs,

5. a statement certified by the competent authority that the child over 14 years of age consents to acquiring citizenship of the Federation of BiH,

6. proof of payment of the federal administrative fee in the amount of 450.00 KM.

Acquisition of citizenship of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina based on an international agreement (dual citizenship agreement between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia)

The party submits the application on the prescribed form, attaching the following documentation:

1. extract from the MKR,

2. certificate of citizenship of the Republic of Serbia for the applicant,

3. certificate of residence in the territory of BiH issued by the competent body of the Ministry of Security for the applicant,

4. certified statement of compliance with the legal order of BiH and the Federation,

5. extract from the marriage register, i.e. proof of free marital status,

6. certificate of BiH citizenship of the applicant's spouse if citizenship is acquired on the basis of marriage to a BiH citizen,

7. certificate of no criminal proceedings being conducted at the place of residence for the applicant,

8. certificate of criminal records issued by the competent body of the Republic of Serbia at the place of birth of the applicant,

9. certified copy of the applicant's passport,

10. proof of payment of the federal administrative fee in the amount of 450.00 KM.

The party accepting children under the aforementioned contract is required to submit the following documentation with the request:

1. certificate of residence registration for the child on the territory of the Federation,

2. extract from the MKR,

3. certificate of citizenship for the child from the home country,

4. certificate from the school if the child attends it,

5. certified statement from the competent authority on the consent of the other parent for the child's admission to citizenship,

6. statement certified by the competent authority that the child over the age of 14 consents to acquiring citizenship of the Federation of BiH.

Citizenship of Bosnia and Herzegovina ceases:

1. by force of law,

2. by renunciation,

3. dismissal,

4. subtracting,

5. international agreement.

Termination of Federation Citizenship Based on Discharge

The party is required to submit the following with the request:

1. extract from the MKR,

2. certificate of registration of residence,

3. certificate from the court that no criminal proceedings have been initiated for a criminal offense for which the person is being prosecuted ex officio (of not conducting criminal proceedings),

4. extract from the criminal record issued by the competent body that keeps such records according to the person's place of birth (certificate of no conviction), and if the person was sentenced to prison in the Federation, that the sentence has been served,

5. certificate from the competent tax authority that there are no outstanding tax and customs obligations,

6. certificate that there are no obligations to pay determined by final decisions of the competent authorities (obligations related to property-legal relations and obligations related to marriage and marital relations, parent-child relations, adoption, guardianship and maintenance, and that they arose from the Family Law of the Federation),

7. proof that the person has acquired or is guaranteed to acquire the citizenship of another state,

8. proof of payment of the federal administrative fee.
